Many communities in the world wear head coverings prominently as part of their religion or tradition. Such communities include the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, the Horn of Africa, North Africa, etc. However, gone are the days head coverings were used by women across the world for either religious or traditional purposes only. Now there are no barriers to head coverings. People from diverse cultural backgrounds and religions wear head wears and regard them as the desired fashion piece.
In the Middle East, and especially in Dubai, you get to see headwear fashion of different variety. One that is very fascinating is the turban — you can get ready-to-wear ones (even luxury brands like Gucci, Ferragamo, and Missoni), or the types that are designed with knots, twists or plaited fabric. Some prefer the hand-tied, DIY head wraps, which can be more fun and versatile. Women can wear head coverings in various ways to add beauty and style to their outfit, making it more than just religious wear.
Fashion designers are now adapting to the growing market for modest and fashionable head coverings. Diverse elaborate designs are being created with scarves, turbans, and hijabs. With fashion brands like Gucci, H&M, Dolce & Gabbana, DKNY and Tommy Hilfiger releasing their various collection of head coverings including turbans, babushka hoods, pagoda hats, hijabs, niqabs, and abayas. Non-Muslims have been spotted wearing hijabs and niqabs for the love of it.
Even celebrities are not left out from this fashion train. Several celebrities including Angelina Jolie, Kim Kardashian, and Rihanna have been spotted on different occasions rocking beautiful headscarves. A while ago, Rihanna came under fire for wearing a hijab and posing at an Abu Dhabi mosque. This goes to show that for some head coverings are linked with modesty while some regard it as a fashion item. Also in 2017, hijab-wearing model Halima Aden featured in an ad campaign for Rihanna’s lip gloss collection. This has stirred many to embrace head coverings as a fashion statement.
Some fashion bloggers have also brought head coverings into people’s consciousness. Through their YouTube channels, Instagram pages, and other social media platforms they promote head wraps in a way that inspire their audience to cop them into their fashion style. The number of YouTube videos on turban tutorials shows just how much people are interested in head coverings.
So while some Jews, Muslims, Christians, and Rastafarians wear different types of head coverings, several cultures also wear head coverings that are not necessarily linked with any religion or faith. And there are others who wear headscarves simply because they want to look modest and chic. Well, we do have some who wear them for the sole purpose of looking good and making a fashion statement. Whatever the reason you choose to wear your head wrap, feel beautiful and confident!
